My Great Uncle Fred Rypsam painted this picture of the Howard F. Clark, a Destroyer Escourt (DE), with another DE in the distance. My Father, Commander David Miller, was the captain of this ship, which was named after a brave Navy fighter pilot who died early in World War II. My Dad commisioned Fred to do a painting of just the ocean, a view he saw and still loved. despite sacrificing many years to win the war. My Uncle Fred persuaded him to have his ship in the oil painting. I love the way the sun is breaking through the dark and cloudy sky, as well the mighty Pacific Ocean waves, which became the burial blankets of so many brave US Navy sailors. God bless them. We should all honor them and thank them for keeping our country free. |
